Human African trypanosomiasis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: progress towards elimination as a public health problem

<p>The Democratic Republic of the Congo reports the majority of gambiense human African trypanosomiasis cases worldwide. This review analyses surveillance data from 2010 to 2023 and describes the country&39;s progress towards the WHO elimination target. Annual case numbers declined from 5,600 in 2010 to fewer than 400 in 2023. Integration of screening into primary health care and the introduction of fexinidazole have transformed case management. Sustained funding and surveillance are essential to achieve elimination by 2030.</p>
